There are good and bad in everything. I am a Realtor (good) and I work with mostly good ones. There are some bad ones too. As in all professions, as with all people, you will see a range. If you are looking for one, ask around, interview several. Trust your gut.

Realtors are good, but like anything, you can find dishonest ones. Ask for references and call those references.

Remember also that a Realtor has a fiduciary responsibility to the person whos house he is trying to sell, not to the person buying the house. So if you're approaching this question as a buyer, then keep in mind that the Realtor doesn't have your best interest at heart, but the best interest of the seller.

Buyers can procure the services of a buyers agent to help on the purchase side of the equation.

Don't try to sell a house on your own. Realtors get paid their 6% or 7% because they bring a lot to the table. Use one.

Good luck!

I associate with Realtors companies in my links of my on-line Business http://Bigdoggpinc.ispeedway.com and they send me a lot of serious patrons and I also have done business with them on buying property. I like the women more then men not taking nothing away from the men, but the women understand the meaning of owning a property and making it a home. The deceitful comes into play when you are dealing with a Realtor that got into the business for just the financial gain of it. Most in the Midwest and East Coast seem more into you than the ones in California. There is bad people in most business companies, when I was working as a Manager they encouraged me to treat my staff very firm and harsh to get my point across and taken serious. I always disagree with that type of ethics, you communicate well with others things just flow better and the business will flourish..........just my opinion.

First of all you need to educate yourself. A real estate agent will help you buy or sell a house. "Realtor" is a designation given to someone who is a member of usually the National Association of Realtors and his/her local association. A Realtor agrees to abide by the bylaws and ethics set by the association.

Real estate agents are licensed by their respective states and the liability placed on them by the law partly justifies their compensation. They are also compensated for their knowledge which can greatly assist the customer to navigate the maze of home selling or buying - navigating the maze well to a successful conclusion. Salesperson is, in my opinion, the least important - still important, though - of the traits of a good real estate agent.

To answer your original question, real estate agents, like any profession, vary greatly as to expertise and ability. If you are seeking an agent, be up front as to your needs and expectations.

As for trustworthiness...If you are looking for an agent, try getting a referral from a friend or relative and ask about agents with whom they have had good experiences. An agent is just that, an agent for you - someone who is to represent your interests.

If you have never bought or sold a home, go to www.realtor.com. There is a section called "Real Estate 101," which could be of great help to you. Good Luck!

As with people in general, there are those who are honest and some who are dishonest. You as a discerning individual must see through all of this and choose the one(s) you find comfort in trusting. You must do your research about what you've been told and go from there. Only God is perfect so even if a realtor is honest, he/she may not always give you the best advice. Since you trust yourself best, use your brain to find out for yourself what you wish. Then too, there is the library. Believe me, I would not hesitate to use the Harold Washington Library (main library) which is located here on State Street and Congress Parkway in Chicago, Illinois. The people there offer extremely high research skills with a professionalism that I haven't seen in years. True, some of this research may cost money, but that's what all of the major libraries do. Peace and God Bless.

This depends on what business you have with them. They are normally quite good if you are going to rent a property. If you are going to buy, they can be deceitful. I have experience of selling a property in the UK. One realor valued my property at 10,000 Pounds less than another one. They just put houses up for a low mount to get the commission ASAP. I think they should have a set amount for different price brackets when selling property. These amounts should be set by a government office. The system used at the moment (a % of the selling value) is unfair. An example of this is: a property sells for $200,000 and another sells for $500,000. They do the same work for each, yet the commissions are $4,000 for the first one and $10,000 the second. Is this fair?

That depends on your realtor, if you don't feel comfortable with who you have, change. Some can be. You must understand, most get paid by the sale. Of course they will try to push the house onto you.

Most realtors have to follow a creed, Although most are honost and helpful, they still are up against the other realtors who are out for the almighty buck.

Both on each question they are good for helping you find a place but they usually show you what they want you to buy, leaglly they have to tell you if anything is wrong with the house but they can word it to where it seems as tho nothing is really wrong with (watch out for the word play and tell them before that they show you any house exactly what your looking for and if they dont show you at least in the general idea of it tell em they will be fired and you will find a new realitor)
