I went fishing the other day, and now I have sunburn on my face, chest, and both arms. Even my hands are sunburnt. Thing is, I didn't notice the bottle of sunscreen I had used expired three years ago (I'm visiting my grandparents...they tend to forget things like that). It hurts like hell-every time I move my wrist it feels like my skin is going to tear apart. Could someone please recommend some kind of remedy? Are there medications that work well, or at-home things I can do to lessen the pain? Please help!

You might try using some DMSO on the burned area. Works great for burns (sunburns too), cuts, and other injuries. I have been using it for ages, and it still works for me. I'm not dead, yet, and nothing bad has happened to me from using it.

I find that it not only heals things more quickly, but cuts way down on scaring, too.

Some people say that they get the taste of garlic in their mouths right after applying it, others say that their friends say that they smell like garlic. But if it works for you that is a small inconvienence to have.

It has been around for a long time. Veternarians have been using it for years.

The AMA won't rate it for human use, probably because the drug companies don't want it put on the market for people. Might cut their sales for a lot of other stuff that they promote.

You can get it in a local feed store, and it is fairly inexpensive. If you should happen to get some, go for a small size. The stuff lasts forever (doesn't go bad), and the ammount that you need to use is usually pretty small.

Now days it comes in a variety of application methods. Use to be a liquid only product.

And No, I do not own stock in DMSO, or get a commission.

I attached several websites below, so you can read about DMSO and make your own choice.

Whatever you use, good luck with the burn.

I feel for you because I've been there and the pain is miserable. I have always kept an aloe vera plant growing in a planter since then and when I get a burn or any kind of wound I go clip a piece and rub the pure gel like stuff on it, and it really does help. If you blister up and it pops, be ready for even more pain. An oatmeal bath may help, soaking in cool water might feel good as long as you're not at the stage of having blisters popping open...good luck and take care.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends taking a cool bath or trying some moisturizer, aloe vera or over the counter hydrocortisone cream.

But not all remedies need to be topical.

Dr. Rutledge Forney, a dermatologist, says, “Aspirin is incredibly helpful with a sunburn, it's an anti-inflammatory in the skin so if you get a burn, aspirin is a great thing to take on a regularly scheduled basis until it calms down.”

Some dermatologists warn against using products that claim to relieve the sting of a sunburn as they can be irritating to the skin.

Two suggestions:

1. Aloe Vera gel (either crushed out of the plant itself, or bottled from the store in the suntan products section)

2. Bathe your skin with a half-water, half-cider vinegar mixture. It will help take the sting away.

Watch out for sun poisoning--tiny blisters, rubbery patches of skin. If this happens, see a doctor right away!
