I've had the iRiver and the quality was great. But an iPod is a cultural icon!! you cannot say no!!!

I would say you need to decide
-- what look you want(how big, shape, image)
-- what size drive you simply must have
-- what types of files you want it to play
And then when you find the iRiver and the iPod models that have that compare the prices. If the price of the iPod is much much higher, then go for the iRiver. Otherwise, stick to the iPod. There is so much more customization and fun available for them.

It very much depends on what you want to use the mp3 player for. Newer mp3 players feature video playback among other features. Personally, I think that if you're looking for a mp3 player that you want to watch video on in addition to music, you're better off staying away from the iPod. The battery life is very bad when it comes to movies. I would recommend the Creative Zen Vision, which is relatively new, but a popular alternative to the iPod. At about the same price as an iPod of similar hard drive space, the player features a battery life of up to 14 hours of music playback and 4 hours of video playback. While with the iPod, you can rarely finish a movie without the battery running out, you can watch a whole movie on the Zen and still have battery left to listen to a few hours of music. THat's not to say that the iPod wouldn't be a great choice. If you're looking for a smaller capacity mp3 player, I think the Nano is a good choice. The ease of use is great, not to mention it can fit in any pocket with its small size.

There are many other mp3 players out there, and I recommend looking at ConsumerReports.com for ratings, maybe also check out Yahoo!Tech, I believe they have user reviews of mp3 players. Amazon.com is also a great place to find 100s of user reviews. The most important thing is to do research. Do you listen to a lot of music (i.e. do you have over about 5 gigs?), do you listen to music often, do you want to watch video, how much am I willing to pay, etc.

i have had 2 ipods and not any other but i prefer ipods. they come with own software--itunes. dont think iriver does. itunes it great way to organize ur music and it helps alot. i love it. also ipod are very cool and look cool too lol. they do. that is partly y ppl buy it. also ipods can do sooooooooo much more than irivers can and other mp3 playters. play videos, store files, look at photos, audiobooks, podcasts, everything. ok.

The Creative Zen Micro (Price Range 150.00 - 170.00) For 5 GBs of memory it's similar to iPod touch design but it cheaper but otherwise it very identical to the iPod actuall Apple is suing Creative because they say they stole the touch idea or whatever.

iPod? no way. be your own person. do some research and find a mp3 player that best suits you. I have a Creative Zen Sleek (works great for a good price), but you should get whatever reflects your needs and personality.

"Best" always depends on the type of person you are. In the context of mp3 players, the important question is are you a light music listener or a heavy music listener.

If you are a heavy music listener, I recommend a Samsung YEPP YP-Z5 (4gb) which can hold "a lot of songs".

But if you are a light music listener, Id recommedn something like the Samsung Yepp YP-T5V (256 MB) which holds less songs but enough for the light/average music listener. It also has a significanltly lower price at $55.
