Start>Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds > New Mail Notification
You can, from there, select a sound.

It depends on the program that you are using. I use incredimail, and its great, i can set just about any noise to go off when i get mail. If you look at the programs manual or read the help topics i'm sure you'll find something useful.

your computer by itself will not do that - it will take some type of software - such as yahoo mail or microsoft outlook or similar programs. If you are here in yahoo answers then you have yahoo mail? - I get a little noisey reminder everytime i get mail - perhaps you need to check your preferences

What e-mail client are you using? They are different on how to have an audible indicator of new mail.

what e-mail do you use? Yahoo? MSN?
yahoo has the sound that sounds like paper scratches, msn doesn't have the service as far as i know

If you have Yahoo Messenger, you can set it so that it alerts you when you have email.
