Well that really depends - live where, CA or AL? apartment or house, kids or no kids?
When I moved out and got my first one room studio apt in St Louis, I was making $8.00 - but that was 18 years ago.
Today, I would guess a minimum of $15 if you like bologna and mac & Cheese. But I am sure there are people who survive on less.

It all depends on where you live or trying to live because the economic systems vary everywhere.
If you have a car note or other bills now, tally them up, allow enough for utilities, all I can say that you got to do above minimum wage unless you can have roomates to evenly split costs with you.
In my area, Chicago suburbs, I would not do lower than $7.50/hour because I don't have anyone to roomate with.
I live with a guy now, but soon that'll change.

That is hard. It depends on how you want to live. I can not live on any thing less the $20. But that is me and I have a college degree and that is still a tight living but I am a teacher and that is the way it goes. But look at were you want to life and how you want to live and add it up and that is your number.

to live on my own, i'd need 60K a year, take home. this is about $90K before taxes, which (if i worked full time) is around $45/hour.
this is assuming that i'm neither abandoning my children nor giving up my home, as these are not options.
