In terms of businesses and their adaptation to change, Kmart and Sears suggest inflexibility. Some suggest that both firms failed and still fail to see the environmental upheavals over the past decade that WalMart easily navigates. The question is whether they failed to see it, or whether it was seen but the companies were too disfunctional to make the change happen within.
Sears gets a vote from me for being the world's dumbest company. Think about this: at one time, every small/dinky town as well as every neighborhood in the US had a Sears store, or at least catalog counter/kiosk, where you could go in, order practically anything you could think of, and it would be delivered to that location. When the internet came, why didn't they use this incredible market reach and distribution and leverage it? Sears is still bogged down by the ideology and structure that made it successful 100 years ago. K-mart is victim of the same phenomenon, just less history.
I doubt that the merger accomplishes anything to deal with this huge problem.

adding Kmart to Sears, sears add lower his value in market since Kmart is considered to be ordinary franchise, while Sears has status to stand in mall , or make anywhere and it will gain value, but by adding Kmart sears looks normal store nothing speciall about it

still as far as Sears Essentials are generally away from Sears it will maintain little reputation
