lick on a link like yahoo avatars. and nothing happens. I dont have fire wall or anythingl ike that. help

You must have at&t DSL! It does that to me all the time. Wish I had went with RoadRunner!

If you mean a link as in a shortcut to a program on your PC, it may be that the program or file has been moved or removed. If it has been moved, Windows will try to search for it. If it has been totally deleted - Windows may try to suggest a file which is the nearest match.
Try this: If the link is on your say...Desktop and is a shortcut to a PC file or program, r/click and select 'properties'. Look for a button named 'Find Target' and click. If the prog is still there it will display it - if not, it will show a nearest match which is probably no use at all.
However, if the link is to a URL (Internet shortcut) then check that the address is correct.

Next bit: If the link is built inside a program you are using (eg: yahoo messenger) I suggest you uninstall and re-install that same software. Do this and I guess your problem will vanish like the snow on a hot day in July!
