A hero is someone who does what needs to be done, even if he/she is afraid, even if it's difficult, even if it's unpopular.

A hero is someone who does good everyday, it doesnt have to be just someone who saves people but can be anything else. like your mom or dad, they took care of you all your life, for you there were the best thing ever, that's a hero in my book, a hero is someone to look up to, someone you would like to be when you grow up. They have courage, a big heart, and have alot of love for this world.

From the Greek cognate á¼£ÏÏÏ, in mythology and folklore, a hero (male) or heroine (female) is an eminent character archetype that quintessentially embodies key traits valued by its originating culture. The hero commonly possesses superhuman capabilities or idealized character traits which enable him or her to perform extraordinary, beneficial deeds (i.e., a "heroic deed") for which he or she is famous.
A person normally becomes courageous by performing an extraordinary and praiseworthy deed. A hero normally fulfills the definitions of what is considered good and noble in the originating culture. However, in literature, particularly in tragedy, the hero may also have serious flaws which lead to a downfall, e.g. Hamlet. Such heroes are often referred to as tragic heroes.
Sometimes a person might achieve enough status to become courageous in people's minds. This is usually complemented by a rapid growth of myths around the person in question, often attributing to him or her powers beyond those of ordinary people.
Some social commentators prescribe the need for heroes in times of social upheaval or national self-doubt, seeing a requirement for virtuous role models, especially for the young. Such myth-making may have worked better in the past: current trends may confuse heroes and their hero-worship with the cult of mere celebrity.
Homer applies the Greek word á¼£ÏÏÏ to all free men who were fighting in the Trojan War. Another epic poet, Hesiod, uses it in the context of the Fourth Age of Men. The most common mythological meaning comes from the Greek poet Pindar, who presents them as the offspring of mortals and the gods or those who had done a great service to mankind.

Under re-definition.
Classicly, as in Antigone, Bhagvad Gita, the Odyssey, Beowulf..
It's a man of virtue put to a challenge, who faces peril and temptation, and through violence atones and is able to return home, victor and hero.
Colloquially the usage is extended to active members of the community, who live by example and strive to make their service or dedication to people paramount. A mystical male adventure to slay dragons is a kind of fairy-tale we've assessd and grown tired of... though of course the symbolic value of this mythological heritage will always be with us.

That would be my Dad that worked 3 jobs to take care of us. Fought in WW2. Loved his family more than himself. Took time for strangers, cared about our world, loved my Mother even when she was angry. Kissed by boo-boos, taught me to throw a baseball. Was there when I cried, when I laughed. Ran my brother in his arms to the hospital in his bare feet when the car wouldn't start. Moved me into my 1st place, took me back home when my boyfriend was a jerk. Helped me buy my 1st house, watched as I loved, cried when I lost. Died with dignity. That is a hero.
