I know one would need a wireless router.

An external or external wireless card.

Would the NIC be other than ordinary?

External are more flexible down the road, internal wireless are harder to install. Make sure the card and router support the same types of networks (802.11a, b, g)

The external or internal wireless "card" IS your NIC (network interface card), so if you see wireless as "other than ordinary", yes. There's no need for an ethernet NIC if you are wireless.

You would only need a wireless router and a wireless NIC for each computer you would want to connect wirelessly. Just make sure the router and NIC are compatible with each other (ie. They're both 802.11b or 802.11g) http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless80211/a/aa80211standard.htm

You got it right, you need a wireless access point/router and a wireless NIC.

You are on your way.
