Yes they are fine pets as long as you research them PRIOR to purchaseing them to make sure they are in fact the type of pet that you want.
They are nocturnal therefore they do most of their activities at night while we sleep. They do need specific tank conditions in order to have them live for any period of time. We have some that are 10 and 15 years old! They are not a cuddly play with it type of creature, they actually do better with some outside play time but when they spend the majority amount of their time with in their tank where they can breathe easier.
Here is a page for you to look over.. http://www.geocities.com/hermitcrab_rescue/areyouready.html
It will give you some of the basics.
I tell you tho I stay busy because of people getting hermit crab with out properly researching and setting their tanks up prior to purchase. People get bored or frustrated with deaths and therfore I get whoever is still alive.
Do not get them thinking they are easy cheap novelty pets because they are not, you are looking at specific supplies, mainting specific tank conditions, daily spot cleans and changing food, specific water trypes as well as the monthy deep clean.
If you ever decide to get some hermit crabs and need some help you can always contact us and we will be glad to help you out.

NO! I have had a hermit crab for a pet, and so have my two siblings. (They give them out at school after we are done with them in 5th grade).
First off, they die right away. So you will spend all this money setting up the environment for it (it sounds like you are) and they have no animal to put in it.
Second, unless you have a good cage, they always manage to escape. Having a hermit crab crawling around my room is not my idea of fun!
Third, you say you don't want fish, but hermit crabs don't do anything either. They just walk around their cage and curl up and sleep.

Uhh not very fun. If you want to see them crawl around everywhere and sleep then its up to you but I wouldn't get a hermit crab. You could spend a lot of money on supplies and he wouldn't even be able to do anything really.

No they are not, maintenance is expensive, lots of them do nothing at day time, mostly dusk performers and besides they need humidity control machinery. So you'll get bored ant it'll die for nothing, instead of passing its genes to the next generation.

Yeah, they are really easy to take care of,I have 3 of them all they do is sleep all day, just make sure you give them lots of water, and not alot of food, they don't usually eat alot of food, because they drink alot of water even though it looks like they don't but they do, ( and I don't understand what you mean by 'Heaters',and they don't cost very much at all, just depends on the store)

They are kind of difficult to maintain and they don't do anything.
Most of the time all you see is their shell or whatever they are using for a house.
How about a white rat or a hamster, or parakeet?
