definition of sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.

Sounds like dance would fall under this category as well as being an art form.

I have been dancing since I was 2 1/2 years old. It is definitely an art form. It is a performing art. People can say or think whatever they want, but the true answers are the ones that come from dancers.

Dancing is both an art and a sport. Look at it this way. When you're dancing, it's obvious that you're breaking a sweat, and you're getting your needed excercise. It's also an art because it can be used to express your emotions, and feelings as well. So, you and your girlfriend are right. Dancing is a good way to lose weight, yet it's also a way to showcase what other talent you have. I should know. I dance myself.

I am sure dancing is an art, and not a sport. Even a dancing competition, would not be considered a sport.

Dance can be a beautiful art form, but is also a sport where you can compete against other dancers. I call dancing my sport because I do it to stay fit. I find it exercises your mind as well as your body

Well, by your logic, skiing is an art, (you can ski by yourself), Swimming is an Art (you can swim by yourself), Ice skating is an art (you certainly can skate by yourself), and on and on.
Competitive dance (partnership dance) is called Dance Sport in many circles... and if you think Ballet isn't a form of a sport, try it out and see what it feels like...that "art" requires more self control than all sports put together. And in fact, Jerry Rice said it best when he said he only THOUGHT football was hard until he tried ballroom competition. !!!

I beleive its always been considered more an art form than a sport, but shes probably thinking about how athletic you have to be to dance for any length of time.

Technically a sport is supposed to include competition (which is why chess is considered a sport). So I guess unless you are on a competitive dance team it is an art.

I have to start up with saying that i can't dance...but i definately think that it's an art. Some people can't dance as good as other no matter how hard they try, but yet the people that become famous dancers, are the ones that are naturally graceful...naturally dancers.
