((since it's only kid games on the computer, I have rebooted the computer with the installation disk the computer came with, usally whenever the computer acts up, this usally fixes everything, just not this.)) Honestly, I am not computer literate, thanks to all who answer(ed)!

I would try unplugging it for 3 to 5 minutes and then plugging it back in.
Hey at least that is a start.
And it something that you can do and it won't wreck anything by trying.
If a screen should come up that say something like 'Safe Mode' or just regular 'reboot' try the 'reboot' before trying the 'Safe Mode'
It really should start in 'Safe Mode'. But you won't have all of the pretty colors and goodies that you had before. But it might be enough for you to get online and figure out the bigger problem.
Good Luck!!!!
Hey, I feel for ya!

I know this one - had it myself a couple of times.

If you have you XP installation CD - you need to re-install.
You need to set the BIOS to boot from CD. To do this, start PC and watch for message in startup screen that says something like BIOS SETTINGS press F8 or DEL key or whatever.
This takes you to the BIOS and from there you can change the way Windows will boot up. Set it to Boot from CD and then save changes and exit. Restart with XP disk inserted and follow instructions for re-install from there.
Warning! Don't change to advanced install as you will lose all data on hard-drive.
Uninstall Norton GoBack and anything else to do with Norton.
Also, for A/virus protection, try a free 30-day version of SOPHOS ANTI-VIRUS. This software is Industry standard and used by City Libraries etc. http://www.sophos.com/products/es/eval.html

Sounds like a video card problem. If the motherboard has the video card built in, this could be big trouble. If the computer has never been opened or upgraded, I'd suggest reinstalling windows and see if that fixes the problem first.

is it possible that some files in the boot initialisation have been deleted or moved by mistake.

when booting, the computer need to initialise the set up of the machine, if the program or file is not present, it thinks it needs to shutdown and reboot as the required files are not present.

You may need to boot to a Windows XP CD and do a Repair.

It could be a memory problem but odds are it is a software problem. If you have a diagnostic disk - run it, if everything comes out OK try starting in safe mode. If that does not work you can try reloading your OS
