It would be very hard. You would need to buy several web servers. Yahoo! and Google have paid millions of dollars for their search engines and have quite a few servers.

The reason you need several servers is because search engines pretty much catalogue the entire web and need a place to store their catalogue. It would be very costly if you wanted to start your own search site.

F.Y.I.: You will never steal the search engine market. Google accounts for over 50% of the search engine market, while Yahoo!, Msn and Ask.com are behind. Your chances of creating a good search engine to compete with Google are slim to none.

If you just want a search on your site, you can get a Google searchbox put on your site, or visit Hotscripts.com for a websearch script.

Step one:

Buy 200 terabytes of disk space

Step two:

Buy some fast webserver machines.

Step three:

Write some code which interprets html, following links and storing them to the disk space.

Step four:

Write some code to display the results of this index to users from the webserver.

Step five:

Get sued by Google, who already came up with this idea.
