Lo and behold, I found it, at IMDB. The film tree was shot at
Malabar Farm State Park - 4050 Bromfield Road, Lucas, Ohio, USA (cabin at beginning, tree and rock wall)

And the shots of "Buxton" were shot in Butler, Ohio.
(rural town of "Buxton" where "Red" journeys to; shot of bus leaving with "Red" near end of film)
Both are in the vicinity of Mansfield, OH, where most of the prison scenes were shot.

The Shawshank Redemption was set in Maine, which is the home state of Steven King, who wrote the story.
The tree is located in a wheat field near Buxton. There is a Buxton, Maine. It's about 12 miles west of Portland, near US Highway 202.

The prison part of the movie was mainly filmed in West Kentucky. I searched the name Buxton on my map program and came up with 9 different states that have that name. I am guessing that the rocks and tree in the movie were either Maine, or Missouri as both places have the same types of topography and fauna.
