Usually that means that there is something up with the cable modem.

The first thing is to make sure you cycle the power on the modem every time you switch (between being connected directly to the router, computer 1 or 2). Every time the MAC address changes (for example if you change it from Cable Modem to Router TO Cable Modem to Computer 1) then you need to cycle the power. If you are just unplugging devices behind the router this usually isn't necessary.

Now, any time you reboot the modem wait a minute and reboot the router.

Otherwise, check the lights:
Power: Should be steady. Blinking usually indicates a hardware failure or that standby is on.
Send and/or Recieve Light(s): Should be blinking rapidly when plugged in to a device. Slowly or solidly can indicate a problem with your network cable or modem.
Cable: Should be solid. Blinking slowly or off indicates a problem with your cable connection (usually physically) or modem.
PC/Activity: Should be blinking fast or solid. Blinking slowly or off indicates a problem with the modem, the cable between the two or the device plugged in.
Standby (if applicable): Should be off. On or blinking indicates that it is in standby mode. Some modems remember this even when power is cycled.

If all the lights blink in sequence, stay on or stay off the modem is usually shot.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: From the manual:

"Light -Turns Off During Startup- If Turns Off During Normal Operation If
Receive- The receive channel cannot be acquired - The receive channel is lost
Send - The send channel cannot be acquired - The send channel is lost
Online - IP registration is unsuccessful - The IP registration is lost
Power - The cable modem is not properly plugged into
the power outlet
-The cable modem is unplugged or is in standby
mode. Press the Standby button"

Also:
"f the solutions listed here do not solve your problem, contact your cable service provider. Before calling your service provider, try one of:
• Unplugging and plugging in the cable modem power cord to restart the cable modem
• Pressing the reset button on the rear panel
Restarting or resetting the cable modem may take 5 to 30 minutes. Your service provider may ask for the status of the front-panel lights as
described in “Front-Panel Lights and Error Conditions” on page 44.

Problem Possible Solutions
Green POWER light is off - Check that the power cord is properly plugged into the electrical outlet and the cable modem.
Check that the electrical outlet is working.
-If the Standby light is on, the Internet connection is off. Press the Standby button to reconnect to the Internet."

Did you reformat or install windows recently? I had the same problem only to find out that I needed to install my motherboard drivers. Or it could be that the router and/or modem is hooked up wrong.

check to see if they are automatically detecting IP address, and check the PC's one at a time without router, plugged in direct to internet provider.
