Is there anything I shouldn't get wet? Anything that would be harmful if water touched it?

Auto supply stores carry spray-on/rinse-off engine cleaners in cans. Buy a couple of cans and use according to directions all over the engine and compartment. It works pretty well with no scrubbing.

Personally, in an old car like that, I wouldn't run any water over the engine. YOu can tape and wrap all you want, but you'll miss something. And some of those wires may still be pretty old, with weak insulation, maybe even cracked...I wouldn't risk it.

When I clean mine, I use the aerosol stuff they sell...usually the foam so you can see where it goes. You can also use Simple Green too. It works pretty well and is biodegradable. I'd get one of those wheel detail brush sets with 3 brushes...nylon, and 2 metal ones. Then grab some rags and have some water handy, either in a spray bottle or just a wet rag. It takes longer, but it's more precise and definitely safer than attempting to wrap everything and take a chance.

I had one too! you can get some engine cleaner, don't spray it on a hot motor, after you spray it on,drive to the nearest carwash,or a good pressure-washer and hot water [turn off motor of course] cover your distrubitor with plastic and tape so it don't get wet.
