The cheerleading that involves competing, working out, conditioning, drills, hours of stunting, daily practices, and team collaboration is a sport.
The cheerleading that involves just learning to clap your hands at the same time and stand on a sideline is Not.

I challenge anyone who disagrees to attend a Cheerleading States Competition. Then talk to the winners about all the work they did to win. Hell, talk to the losers, I bet they did more than any bowling, tennis, swimming, or track team.

We have all heard the opinion that cheerleading is not a sport. The fact that we don't tackle our opponents to the ground for a ball does NOT mean that we are not athletes. We work just as hard as "real athletes" work. Our practices are just as intense and our competitions are even more intense then a basketball or football game. Our sport, unlike most, is not a selfish one. Part of being on a cheerleading squad is appreciating and cheering on our fellow athletes. The same athletes that insult OUR sport. What is it that qualifies an activity to be a sport? Is it the ball? No, wrestling is a sport and it doesn't contain a ball. Is it the sweat? Can't be the sweat, cheerleaders sweat just as much (but we hide it well!) Is it the practice? Nope, our practices are more intense than many other sports' practices. The audience? No, can't be that either, audiences at competitions out number those at many ball games! So WHAT is it?! Cheerleading takes just as much dedication and skill as any other sport, sometimes it takes more. The problem is that other athletes have no idea what it takes to be a cheerleader. We make it look so easy. We fly through the air with grace, we catch our teammates as though they are feathers floating from the sky. They don't understand the technique and time it takes to master such skills. To us, cheerleading is not a game, like football or basketball, cheerleading is a way of LIFE. Cheerleading, more than any other sort, teaches important skills such as cooperating. Let's face it, if a cheerleading squad can't cooperate, stunts can't hit and people get hurt. Other sports ENCOURAGE team cooperation, and they may lose a game if they fail to cooperate;. but overall, no one gets hurt. What does a "sport" have that we don't? We practice, compete, have rules, go through training, sweat, fall, get hurt, and dedicate our lives to cheerleading...there is NO REASON why cheerleading should not be considered a sport.

Everything that Ms. JoJo has said I agree with 100%. Cheerleading is just as much a sport as baseball, basketball and all others. Why do we have to be pushing, tugging, fighting etc. for someone to consider something to be a sport or not? There are endless hours of pratice which are in no way easy ((we just make it look like that)). There are competitions, skills that most athletes don't or aren't capable of. Whoever doesn't consider it a sport try it and then let us know how you feel..........

Yes, dear, Cheerleading is a sport. My daughter was a cheerleader and believe me, she worked out plenty.

Also, Cheerleading also lends itself to leadership! So, actually, it's more than a sport. Once you have been a cheerleader, you learn to be strong, both physically and with your personal character. It's not to be taken lightly. :) It will help prepare you for the future to stand up and be a positive leader in many different areas of life! Cheer your heart out and have fun!

Yes, it is so a sport. At my school the cheerleaders practice longer and harder than any other sport. We have mon-sat. packed w/ practices, comps., and games. No free time at all. I have been told more than once from other big sport people that after watching our practice they really admire us for what we do. One of my favorite quotes is: basketball player throw a ball in a hoop, football players throw a ball throw a touchdown pole, cheerleaders throw a girl 20 feet in the air and only have 3 people to catch her....what is more extreme?

If you want poker to be a sports it will be. If cheer leading teams compete with another then. yes! I guess it can be. But they were created to cheer sports teams.

So the foundation of a thing is what it is. If there are things added on top of that foundation, then it no longer leads cheering.

It only shows me that there is very little humility in anything.
