The dishwasher does a better job sanitizing and uses less water then hand washing.

Given an equal amount of dishes, handwashing usually conserves more water. I'm assuming that a large dishpan is used to wash the dishes in. It may not be more conserving if each dish is washed individually in running water.

I'm going by the fact that my water bill has dropped now that I don't run my dishwasher.

I would just let the dog lick the dishes then all you got to do is put them up. Saves on dog food too.
