They are supposed to be at the 8th grade level, however most are truly only at a 3rd or 4th grade reading level.

Most local newspapers are at a 5th grade level. But nation wide newspapers are at a higher level like 7th grade or 9th grade.

The New York Times, Financial Times are a bit harder. I still have trouble understanding those publications.
