Top of the line solid state MP3 player-- go for iRiver. They don't force you to subscribe to any one service, yet work with a variety of services.
I have two iRivers (my girlfriend and I) and they kick ***!
Apple bites because they break easily, and once you lose your iPod... you lose what you've paid for if you cancelled your iTunes service. Also, iPod doesn't work with anything *except* iTunes... which just sucks.
Creative Labs models are OK, but not as easy to use as iRiver.
