if you feel that your son is mature enough to handle that kind of responsibility you can. If you do decide to the make sure you go over the house rules repeatedly, and call him unexpectedly to make sure

If you've got good enough fire insurance, sure! You probably know your son better than anyone else. If you're asking here on Yahoo, you've probably got some concerns about his maturity. I wouldn't do it unless I felt really sure. If you think it's that he really is mature enough, but you're not ;) , try leaving him alone for an hour or two while you go shopping or something, to give yourself more confidence in him.

The best approach I've ever seen was a woman I worked with who would call her son everyday at the time he was supposed to be home from school, and she'd go over her expectations for him: do his homework, take out the trash.... Basically, helping him to structure his time until she got home.

NO way you could not trust that no one would be comming to see you and who that would be and you would not be sure if he would leave the home or not........I say leave him with a friend or a relative for the time that you will be gone and it will be fine........ I would say it would be fine to leave him alone but California is a large place if you lived in a small town like I do then it would be fine because there is nothing to do and nowhere to go where I live at least on foot for at least 20 miles.......Good Luck.........

sure you can, as long as you have someone responsible to keep check on him and someone he can go to if he should need help.
Of course it would also have to depend on how responsible your 12 year old is. If your son is not very responsible then it would be in your best interest and your sons to have a sitter for him, to be sure he is safe. I would not have a problem with leaving my son home as long as he was responsible and I have someone to keep check on him.

yes i think that would be fine

as long as you think he is responsible enough to do it.
Just make sure he is comfortable , that he locks all the doors and lets no one in the house

also call him throughout the day
