I am taking a summer class in Human Sexuality and we have to agree or disagree about teaching or not Sexual Variation in an academic setting (universtiy). The professor asked us if we think that it is a waste of valuable time and energy.
I think we should study to better understand and your answers would help me to support my point of view.
Thank you

If the class is about human sexuality then discussing variations certainly seems to be germane to the topic. Unless there is a limit on how much material can be covered in the time frame the class allows and there are other more main stream subjects that would not receive their fair share of discussion time, why not?

They teach useless crap in Universities lots of the time. This is something that could help many people understand, and even sometimes connect with, the variations of sexuality. So many people have no idea why cross dressers do what they do. So many people assume they do it because they're weird - so many people assume sexuality is a choice, no matter what yours is. I guess everyone woke up one day and decided "Hmm, I think I'll be straight. No wait, gay. No...Trannie!"

It just doesn't work that way, and a class taught about it at a university would be a class I would definitely take. For one, it's interesting, and for two, I can connect with much of it, being a gay man myself. Not a cross dresser or feminine by any means, but it is still interesting to learn. And it's more useful in everyday life than history is anyday.

By variations, do you mean different positions, practices like S/M, etc? I think you should learn about everything.

absolutely, in fact the idea that it wouldn't be taught in anything above a fifth grade sex ed class is disturbing to me.
