Understand, anything you buy will be subject to a failure rate. The idea is to get the product with the lowest failure rate. Apple is usually up there (but anyone can have a bad line once in a while - not saying they have, but they could).
When it comes to buying a laptop, I'd say you can buy from anyone, keeping in mind these rules:
1. 3 Year Warranty - do not buy a laptop without one. While they have become more modular, they still contain very specialized parts that are neither cheap to replace or easy to buy at the local computer shop - this is your version of insurance that if something happens, you can get it repaired (note, they often do not cover stupidity and accidents - testing if your laptop can support a cars weight or accidentally dropping it down stairs will not be covered in most cases).
2. Buy a major brand. If you've never heard of them, they aren't a major brand. If you have, but your friends haven't (your NON-TECHIE friends), then they are not a major brand. You want a major brand who will be around to honor the warranty for its duration and an otherwise "common" product that can be easily repaired by a professional even after the warranty period (computers today can have a useful life of 7+ years, unlike computers 7 years ago, depending of course on what you do with it).
3. Call support before you buy - a couple of times. Find out how long you'll have to wait to get through if there's a problem.
Now all that said, I do NOT like sony laptops (as stylish as they are) because they (as of the last time I bought one) only offered a 90 day warranty - unless you registered with them. And their support (at the time - 3+ years ago) was awful - it took a month to convince them I needed to send the notebook back for repairs and another month before they sent it back to me, repaired.
If you want to use MacOS your choice is simple - buy an Apple - they are the only systems that can run MacOS. If you run Windows, you may still be able to buy a mac as the newer ones use Intel CPUs and I believe (verify this first) they are now allowing Macs to run Windows if you want.

I have to say ACER.
I use dell inspiron 1150 , XPS and IBM T40.
You have to notice something here, Dells getting huge and bulky and IBMs getting heavy. The most important advantage of having a laptop is being portable and work anywhere, but if it ways 4 to 5 kg , carrying it is just a problem. Another issue is the protection. You drop your laptop from a meter high and most probably its hard disk is gone, and the LCD or XGA. You put too much pressure on top and got a crack on it.
Acer seem to be well designed for portability and style, and all their laptops are quite lightweight, the design makes it look smaller and stylish and yet powerful enough to get the job done.

All pcs manufacturers get their aspects from an similar distributors, and in fact that's a remember of success if any given unit will very last more than yet another style. aspects have 'tolerances' for bypass/no-bypass overall performance, and once you're fortunate, the progression station's worker will grab a ingredient from the bin that has brilliant tolerances, etc down the total assembly line, and the outcome's a composite of quite sturdy aspects. only one in each of those grabs getting a low-end ingredient skill untimely failure. I have a ten three hundred and sixty 5 days previous Toshiba that operating nicely, besides the indisputable fact that that is CDchronic has never performed sterlingly. different people will say they're garbage...besides the indisputable fact that that is quite a remember of success. purchase the only you could arise with the money for; has the effective aspects you want, and matches your needs, and study the do's and don'ts about care & upkeep...and pray.
