It ended WWII.

It stopped the war. Whether it saved or cost more lives is sort of up to debate. Keep in mind though, those were atom bombs. We are into Hydrogen at this point. They have a 10 MILE KILL RADIUS. That means anything within 10 miles of ground 0 is dead. Atom bombs were good for around a mile. Everybody else just got the crap irradiated out of them.

10 miles are where we are with the current nukes. Cute.

The whole damned thing is cute.

It has never been used again. Although 5 major countries are publically acknowledged to have nuclear technology and many more are researching it, no country has used nuclear weapons against another country, despite the number of extremely violent wars that have happened since WWII and are currently going on around the world. Humanity has seen what it does and is repulsed by it.

Japan withdrew from the war against America. If you do not meet agression with agression you open the door for further invasion. People have issues with war as do I, by not reacting to an assault it would not stop the assault. Would it be better to not be America? Should we invite war by giving out love waves? are you willing to live under another rule say communism or socialism? What about facism?

No WW3 in 1964, thorough testing, it enabled the US to beat the Japanese.
It ended ww2 in the Pacific. The war in Europe had already been won largely by the Russians and UK w. US assistance.

It stopped Japan from fighting. Even after the first bomb was dropped they still wouldn't surrender. There was no alternative, it was either have a bunch of Japanese die or aq bunch of Japanese and Americans die. Don't think we just said screw you an dropped it, it was our last resort.

it caused world powers to compete in a nuclear arena which resulted in balloning defence budgets, thus limiting the need for conventional warfare ..yet truly scaring the piss out of the generals who might have cause to use nuclear capabilities because fear of mutual destruction...detent i think they called it...it also stopped WW2 type of conflicts from happening and allowed populations to increase

It proved Einstein's equation E=mc2 was correct. It enabled nuclear fission to be used for peaceful purposes, i.e. nuclear powered energy. It led the way to nuclear fusion where research is still underway for peaceful purposes.

The claims made at the time were that there would be over one million American casualities if we had to invade Japan. It was bad we had to do it, but Japan would not surrender. They chose to die to the last person.
