i reformated my laptop recenty and the guy at the computer shop said that i would loose all my files , songs etc when i reformat it.. is there anyway that i can back up all my files and songs in my C drive so that nothing would be deleted??

You can backup any drive and would not lose any data if u save them on USB drive or disk.

You can do several things, the two options I'd recommend are:
1. Get an external USB hard drive and copy the files off your computer, anything you want to backup, make sure you put on the external drive.
2. Use a utility like BartPE to boot your computer and rename the WINDOWS, PROGRAM FILES, and DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folders (I usually add a .old to them). Then just install Windows. It's like a format without actually formatting.

tell him to build a partition on your hard drive labeled sys save, store all of your files and stuff on that parttion and when he formats your hard drive not to delete that partition. He will have to use MS-DOS and the system BIOS to do this.

Buy a external HD and transfer the files to that. That will preserve them, and then you can move them back to your internal HD when the time is right.
