I am wondering how ambulance and fire truck drivers always know thier way around. Are they like taxi drivers and have to study the roads, or do they get a printout off of mapquest from the hospital on the way to the scene? How does that work exactly?

They can get lost. My boyfriends did many years ago. If they are in a known area, they just know the way around, the way you do. If traveling to an unknown place, then just like you and me, they can get lost. With GPS now, I'm sure it less common, but these things an happen.

lol ya'll are stupid.
We get dispatched by a 9-1-1 center and they give us an address, name and cross streets...
If the driver (EVO) still cant find it they look on a map, or call 9-1-1 dispatch for further info i.e. color of house, or repeat info..
If your not in EMS and dont no. DONT ANSWER
