Deciduous forests consist principally of trees and shrubs. A deciduous forest is filled with plants that lose all of their foliage for some part of the year. In certain cases, the foliage loss coincides with the occurence of winter in temperate (or polar) climates. Other deciduous forests lose their leaves during the dry seasons in climates that have a seasonal variation in rainfall.

Deciduous forests are found in the eastern half of North America, the middle of Europe, and many deciduous forests located in Asia. Some major areas that they cover are eastern China, Japan and southwest Russia. There are also deciduous forests located in southern Austrailia, New Zealand, and South America has two large deciduous forests in south Chile and the eastern coast of Paraguay.

Quick Fact The average annual temperature in a deciduous forest is 50° F. The average rainfall is 30 to 60 inches a year.
The Five Zones of Deciduous forests:
The Tree Stratum zone
Zone contains trees such as oak, maple, chestnut, hickory, elm, walnut, and sweet gum trees.

The small tree and sapling zone
This zone has young, and short trees.

The shrub zone
Some of the shrubs in this zone are rhododendrons, azaleas, mountain laurel, and huckleberries.

The Herb zone
It contains short plants such as herbal plants.

The Ground zone
It contains lichen, club mosses, and true mosses.

A deciduous forest also has four seperate seasons - spring, summer, fall (autumn), and winter. During the fall season many plants leaves change colors from green to orange, and during winter nearly all trees lose their leaves.

a deciduous forest has trees that loose leaves every fall. generally the soil would be less acidic than that found in a forest containing cedars or other conifers.
