I loved it. It's small, but actually pretty nice. Most of the people speak English pretty well and most are nice, provided you are polite and respectful of their culture. There's not a LOT to do there, but they do have a few beaches...the Marina Club is nice as is the Ritz Carlton Hotel. The Seef Mall is good for shopping, but a bit pricey. You HAVE to go to the souq in Manama and a tour of the Grand Mosque is worth the time. Swimming with the dolphins at Dolphin Park was also a great experience! A lot of the hotels have good night clubs, but the drinks are pretty expensive and you want to be careful about going to some of the clubs. If you can contact the Naval base, they should be able to give you a list of areas to avoid. Oh, and go the the Dana Mall and have a Turkish coffee at the Red Lounge for me!
To get around, rent a car, just make sure you get an international driver's license from AAA. It's pretty easy to drive, you just have to make sure you are alert at all times as they do tend to drive pretty crazy there, especially on Thursday nights.
Keep in mind that Friday is their Holy Day and a lot of places are closed. Also, some places do close for prayer at different time during the day. Make sure you plan your trip to avoid Ramadan....nothing is open!
Sorry for rambling, but I LOVE Bahrain. I hope this helps you and that you'll keep an open mind about the country...it's a really nice place to visit. If you need to know more, you can email me at racheal36322@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to give you any other info you may need!!!
Now you have made me want to go back!

Bahrain is a small island, with almost everything is in the north of it. Americans are okay in Bahrain. You can expect to find many English-speakers among the Bahrainis. You might find some interesting things to do in Bahrain, but other places like Dubai and Kuwait are more interesting. Nearby Saudi Arabia is also interesting in some aspects like shopping, but you have to be careful about how strict they are.

Bahraini people speak english probably better than you do. Its a really small island, a bit of a non event and there is a very large american navel base on it.
What is there to do - nothing really.

Bahrain is a good place. English is widely spoken and understood.
There are many Americans here, so you'll feel at home.
How long are you coming here for?
