A backward K signifies the batter has struck out looking (he didn't swing at the 3rd strike). The regular K means that the batter struck out swinging (he swung at the last pitch).

It's to differentiate between a called strike three and strike out swinging. Also, to show that the batter got owned because he didn't even offer to swing at the pitch.

Backward K's indicate a player went down looking, versus regular K's that indicate he went down hacking.
