Per my history reading it was actually mostly signed on July 2 1776, but held until several missing delegates could sign. I have never read what most consider the date the document was openly posted or more importantly, started on its way to give notice to the principle offending King of the day.

ok... which version of the declaration are you talking about? the final version? the one that was signed? or the one that was in development.... do you really think it was kept secret while they wrote it? It was public for most of the time it was in development.. but it was not published.
