The progression is "multiply by 3", then "subtract 1".
Start with 1.
1 * 3 = 3
3 - 1 = 2
2 * 3 = 6
6 - 1 = 5
5 * 3 = 15
15 - 1 = 14
14 * 3 = 42
42 - 1 = 41

The last two are your answers.
