In the period between 2001 ~ 2004, Olympic Organization marketing generated about $4.3 bllion (USD) in revenues through:
- TV broadcast rights
- Merchandising & Licensing
- Ticketing
- Sponsorships
This however does not address indirect revenues, such as hotel, air travel, tourism, etc.
FIFA announced in April 2004 that it is expecting to earn $144 million profit on $1.64 billion in revenue between 2003 and 2006 (the 4 year cycle including the 2006 World Cup).
So, purely as a stand alone entity, the Olympic Organization generates more revenue, but I'd bet when all economic benefits are factored in, their cash generation may be close. The one major benefit the Olympic Games has is their TV contracts. That generates HUGE dollars...

There is a reason, why the World Cup is never held in the same year as the Summer Olympics, it would not make money. Some countries, spend most of their money training their athletes for the olympics. The Olympics is the ultimate sporting event. The ultimate bragging rights. World cup is close, its bragging rights, but you remember the 28 nights of olympics for the rest of your life, not who won the soccer game.

I'd have to guess the Olympics. The World Cup is a big deal in many countries but in the US, they're involved but I don't personally know anyone who is very into it.
The Olympics involve a lot more countries than the World Cup and it is much more advertised and broadcasted across the world.

Its too soon but i'll let u know the teams i think have a chance. - Colombia ( they grew alot as a team, last world cup they dint have much to offer, but now they got players like Falcao,Guardado, James Rodriguez, Etc. although their defense could be better so i only give em a 40% chance) - Portugal ( Portugal has always had amazingly talented players, but This world cup they come ready to go down fighting, with their Skilled Players like Danny,Ronaldo, and Nani. With a trusty Mid field with Veloco, and a decent defense with Pepe, and Contrao ). - Brazil ( its their home and they have alot of young players that are dying to play a worldcup. With the ronaldiño and Robiño's expirience they could get very Far ) - Argetina ( The best offensive line in the world i would say, they got great attackers all over. Messi, Aguero, Lavezzi, Tevez,Di Maria, Etc. although like colombia i think they need a hetter defense. ) And for last i'd Say Germany very balnced team they have a huge chance of winning if they keep up the good work
