Short for facsimile machine, a device that can send or receive pictures and text over a telephone line. Fax machines work by digitizing an image -- dividing it into a grid of dots. Each dot is either on or off, depending on whether it is black or white. Electronically, each dot is represented by a bit that has a value of either 0 (off) or 1 (on). In this way, the fax machine translates a picture into a series of zeros and ones (called a bit map) that can be transmitted like normal computer data. On the receiving side, a fax machine reads the incoming data, translates the zeros and ones back into dots, and reprints the picture.
Cost of a fax machine ranges depending on the type of machine, they quality of it, and different features you may want.

it is the equal of a long distance call it does cost anything if you have long distance. All you are doing is putting the paper that you want to send in the fax and then you dial the number you want to send the paper to and you press a button like start or send but make sure the people or person you are sending to has a fax machine and one more thing don't forget to plug the telephone cord andmake sure you hear a dial tone

The fax machine performs a lot of tasks, being the most important;

1. scanning the document, so there is a digital representation to transmit
2. handling the calls, connections, and protocol handshaking
3. establishing a digital connection into the other fax machine, in the same way a modem connects two computers.
3. sending the page through this connection
4. Receiving, reconstructing and printing the material.

A device that sends and receives printed pages or images over telephone lines by converting them to and from electronic signals.

It costs the same as a long distance and your local phone call depending on the area code.

It scans the text/image (as xerox does), then converts the picture from digital to analog form (as modem does) and sends it through phone line.
The price is the same as for a regular phone call. Fax to local number is treated as a local call but fax abroad wil require additional expences.
