You have to find ways to involve them in educating themselves. A lot of information transfers from teacher -> student through note taking, memorization, overhead slides, etc. You need to find ways to get the students to discover the information for themselves by leading and guiding them through interactive activities. Pair work, group work, discussions, investigations, debates, etc can all make learning more dynamic. I also suggest getting feedback from the students about what kind of work they want to do. Sometimes it's necessary to write an essay, and essay-writing is an important skill, but sometimes information can be presented in a poster or skit too!

Joke around with them sometimes. Like, tell a joke or a story at the beginning of class or start a little conversation before you have to start teaching. After a relaxing beginning of class some of the students should actually want to work later on in the class. If not, then don't make them take notes constantly. Kids hate constantly taking notes! Do more group activities and class discussions than taking notes. If you want them to write an essay then sort of let them pick the topic. Give them a broad topic so they can research what they want as the actuall main idea of the essay.

What motivates YOU to learn something?

Your student has to perceive a personal gain...the skill should relate to the student's own life goals (short or long-term).

students are sick and tired of the old rules-give them somthing new. surprise them with a teaching that is more on there level. make them feel comfortable with you like your there reallgood friend not there teacher-in doing that they will want to learn.

Make it fun and show how what you're teaching applies to them. This would work best with history and political science, but foreign languages, composition, and sports can be done this way.

Try teaching it in a way that seems fun and they don't realize they are learning!
