Let's start with a bit of two-bit gender usage model theory: The feminine use for a camera is to preserve memories of an event amoungst those present. The masculine use of a camera is to record facts for those not present. (Note that feminine and masculine as genders are much less precise than female and male as anatomical sexes. This is intentional.)

Now, I would suspect that the non-innovative "taking pictures of friends and/or family at random events" that marketing folks use in all the promotional stuff is more of a feminine-gendered usage model. The masculine tendency would be to focus in on what's going on directly and not bother with pictures. (If you wake up too drunk to remember, then the pictures may not be a good thing.)

That said, I've found that I use my camera phone when I'm out researching products. Finally found an end table that looks non-hideous? Take a picture of it and its price tag and show it to the Mrs. to see if she's interested in seeing it in person. I record the facts ("ooh, end table." "ooh, freaky jellyfish." "ooh, etc etc etc") with the intent of sharing them with folks who aren't there to witness what I'm witnessing personally.

That's interesting, it kinda falls between stereotypical gender roles. Men are typically more into gadgets, but women tend to like things that facilitate relationships and socializing. Cameras and phones both do that, so it's not surprising if camera phones have strong appeal to women.

i never really thought of it that way; but everyone that I know with a camera phone is a girl. I'm sure masculine guys have them, just not as many and they don't show them around as much.

Men definately use camera phones. They take pics of women and of course they take pics of themselves. But unlike women, they do not take pics of their friends. That is the big difference.

I don't think I've ever thought about it before, guys would probably take stupid pictures though, like their empty beer can, or their girlfriends bra.
