In terms of cost-cutting, I found that the whiteboard markers sold at IKEA lasted a long time and were much cheaper than their counterparts. The downside is the narrow tip that means you need to be fairly close to the board to see what is written (okay in a class of 20, not okay in a class of 200).

I always use Expo Low Odour Dry Erase Markers. They come in fine or chisel tip and in a variety of colours. One costs around a dollaw eahc, but the come in multi-colours in packs of 4, 8, 12, and 16, which of course cost less than a dollaw each.
