The legallities, with regard to this subject, is whether or not the person doing the checking has obtained the privacy code, or pass code by illegal means. LIstening in on someone elses private conversation, or using information obtained via a private conversation is illegal. If the code was obtained through hacking the system, this is illegal. But if the listening party was given the pass code by the owner, this opens the floor to immoral issue, if you are using something given in strickest confidence for a one time use.

I do not believe it is illegal and I would argue that it is not always immoral. I checked my husband's voicemail on his cell phone when he was incapacitated in the hospital for 10 days and I was responsible for maintaing our family and informing his work and friends. I saw nothing wroing with it and neither did he although there was arguably some stuff he would have preferred I not heard. I have however snooped on other occasions and do believe I was invading his privacy but whether or not it was a moral issue - depends on whose morals you are talking about. There is no "Thow shalt not snoop" commandmant but I felt bad after I did it.

It doesn't seem right to me that someone can check another person's cell phone voicemail with the owner's permission. I don't know what the current laws are, they change by the day, it seems, but it should be illegal if it isn't.

I wonder who would police such a thing? Or how.

It's immoral. However if you were to go the illegal route. It would most be referred to civil court. Unless it led to some type of harm or injury.

Access without hacking, as in you have the password, is like pushing the button on their old style answer machine. Not illegal, just the work of a creep.

Its immoral but it happens more than you think. Often times it is quite beneficial for the person who is doing it but in the long run is probably not worth your time.

Both. It's like you're hacking into someone's system. How do you hack into their cell phone. I mean if you want to be a thief, then do it. Hey, it's not my fault. Man, that is so uncool. Are you kidding me?
