My HS English teacher asked the same question and when I said that I wanted to teach he said, "We need more smart people like you going into the Education field." That's stuck w/me. My only suggestion is to major in a field that needs teachers....like science or math. That way you'll guarantee yourself a job and that you'll be surrounded by others like yourself (I teach math but used to teach Elementary Ed...Math is sooooooooo much better!). Good luck and follow your heart. You won't regret it.

Is it worth it? It not only depends on what you value in life, but also on whether or not you need to pay the bills. It's fine to do what you love--I did--but I also found that the quality of my lifestye was diminished. I can't afford a house--unless I get re-married, and even then it's questionable. The long summer vacations are an illusion; you need the money, so you work summer school. My evenings and weekends are spent correcting papers; you also are required to supervise student activities during break, after school hours, Friday evenings, and even on Saturday mornings. I have seen so many young, well-motivated teachers start their careers full of optimism, only to get burned out and quit---teaching can be brutal! Sure, people are eager to get you into the profession, but, unfortunately, they don't tell you how it really is on a day-to-day basis. If I were to start over again, I wouldn't invest my time and money in getting teaching certification; I'd look for a better paid career. For personal fulfillment, I'd volunteer through my local library to tutor needy kids. Yes, there are some rewards, but there are just too many negatives. I would discourage my own children from entering teaching.

If it is in your heart to be a teacher, then go for it. The teachers you asked may feel frustrated about the current state of the education system, which I understand. I am also a teacher. Despite this, I feel that I have been given an incredible opportunity to influence the life of someone else. My students need me and your future students need you. What keeps me going when I get frustrated is the fact that I entered education to make a difference in someone else's life. Try it and you will love it.
