Think about it. If you were to emigrate to another country that speaks Spanish, do you think the locals would all learn English just for you? Hell no. They would expect you to learn the country's official language. I don't see why that is such a hard concept for some people to grasp.

Interesting query! When journeying to a overseas nation, it's continuously regarded a taboo not to be ready to talk no less than a couple of keywords within the country wide language. A character who movements to a brand new nation might be insane to transport with no need a operating vocabulary within the local language. So appear up the United States in any encycolpedia. Under country wide language, you're going to uncover "None." We wouldn't have a federal language, so how are we able to assume anyone to think they ought to recognise a distinctive language? Right now, there are typically as many local Spanish audio system within the U.S. as there are English audio system -- and so much English audio system are not able to talk or write proper English if they are attempting! Perhaps as a substitute of being disillusioned with immigrants who transfer right here with out figuring out English, we must recall making English the country wide language. Then we will require all people to talk it. And we would be disillusioned whilst they do not. We would additionally finish the requirement that tax types and each and every different executive report be to be had in dozens of languages. But till that occurs, why must they?

Yes. My mom's an immigrant. She learned by watching The Young and The Restless & as I grew up I taught her words that I was learning in school. The only problem with requiring them to learn English is that the United States doesn't have an official language.

Actually they should as English would be what is called a unifying language. We have several cultures here in the United States and we need to have an unifying language.
Also areas that have billboards in other languages are economically destroying those areas by giving them a lower land value and a false image of fiscal content.

If they have come to a English-speaking country, then they should absolutely learn English. If they go to France, they learn French. Immigrants add culural diversity to and enrich our communities. However, some people want us to change so much, that we will lose our own, cultural identities. If they don't like it here, why did they come? Do they want to change our country and end up with the type of society that they left? Let's be reasonable.

Required? that's the sticking point... do you make them do it in a free country... how do you enforce it? a language police? So much for freedom to do what you want?
there are many areas that don't speak English now... China towns and northern suburbs that are mainly Muslim and Vietnamese immigrants...
Is it really that important compared to issues like poverty and low levels of education? Is this what you want your tax dollars spent on?
AND THAT'S NOT EVEN TALKING ABOUT WHAT TYPE OF ENGLISH AND IF YOU LIVE IN THE SOUTH... YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO CHANGE HOW YOU TALK, BECAUSE IT'S NOT PROPER ENGLISH...

yes. If they want to come to this country for a better way of life then they need to learn the language spoken in this country. That language is English. If I were to move to Haiti, I would not expect the swahili speaking natives to learn english just to accomodate me. Of course if they don't want a job here, I hear the welfare system in this country is reason enough to come here. and the welfare office is bilingual.
