You can do like i did and set up a settlement plan with them. What they do is they take a certain amount every month from your checking or savings account and when the last payment is due they pay for it.

First of all call each credit card and try to have your interest lowered. This can be done by calling and saying that you want to cancel the credit card. They should automatically offer a lower interest to try and get you not to cancel the card. If you have more than 2 credit cards cancel a few of them (the ones that dont offer you a lower interest rate when you call to cancel (if that happens) ). Then transfer balances from the cancelled cards over to one with little or no interest for transfered balances. Pay as much as you can each month, more than the minimum payment if possible. Or pay the min. on one with low interest rate and pay off the ones with higher interest rate first. But at least always pay the min. on all credit cards to avoid extra fees.
There are nonprofit companies that can help you. Search the web. I see them advertised on TV all the time but i cant think of any right now. Just search for "nonprofit credit card consolidation". I am sure you will find some.
Also save money where ever you can to pay your bills. Cancel cable or only get "broadcast cable" which is your local channels and sometimes an extra 1 or 2 channels. It is about 17-20 dollars a month depending on which cabel service you use. You must specify "broadcast cable". Also cancel internet if not necessary or use a dial up which you can get for 10 bucks or less a month. Try to pay for things in cash whenever you can. Stop dining out, unless someone else is paying. Buy your food once a week and eat at home. Bring a lunch to work also and do not stop for coffee, you need every penny you make to pay off your bills or else you will never get out of debt. Try not to loan any money from others because that wont help you, it will just make your debt change to someone else.

I would not consolidate credit cards. Consolidation will not take care of the problem. You will only spend more. We've done that. Consolidated, only to spend more.
You need to set up a budget and start a snowball and get rid of the debt.

If you are over your head, then your credit rating is already in danger if not blemished. Call a debt counseling service. They work with creditors for you to get your rates and payments lowered. You will have to close the accounts and make your payments to them. Your credit will suffer for a bit, but you will get out of debt and start fresh. You will also be on the road to cleaning up your credit and getting away from debt collectors.

I had this problem, I did the following:
1. Cut up your cards (A MUST)
2. Take out a personal loan and pay them all off, take it out over six years to lower the payment. Depending on your credit rating you may have to put up collateral, if you work for the government (Post Office, IRS, etc.) they will probably give you the loan and let you pay directly out of your paycheck.
3. Live within your means, it's hard at first but worth the good nights sleep at night.
GOOD LUCK!!

Debt consolidation programs look AWFUL on your credit report. Try to negotiate with each individual bank, most likely they will be happy for some money from you if it is reasonable. You will be surprised at what they can work out for you if you are persistent.

Talk to your bank about a line of credit. If they give you one, use that to pay your credit card balance; the interest rate will probably be MUCH lower and you'll be able to pay it off faster (and more flexibly, depending on your bank).
