I think the whole human race, but especially men, could use a lot more empathy - the ability to feel what the other person is feeling. Douglas Addams in the movie version of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" invented a horrible weapon: the empathy gun. It made the person you aimed it at see things from your viewpoint. Funny thing, as Trillian pointed out, it had no effect on her, because she was a woman. She already understood.
Salman Rushdie said "You can never judge the extent of the injury by the size of the entrance wound." That is a metaphor, folks. Just because periodic pain is common and effects in varying degrees half our population does not mean we men understand or appreciate it. Ancient cultures, Goddess-based ones, used this time as high magick time when energy flowed with the lunar tide. Taboos are good indications of sacredness.
Men can counter with things they experience that are painful, and we all know that men's tolerance for pain is certainly lower than women's, but when it gets down to it we are still talking apples vs. oranges. We have no idea.
I would ask the Questioner how would she see men's behavior changing if we had experienced such pain? Does she see us behaving cavalierly toward women suffering now? I certainly do not behave that way. If anything, I try to be extra nice. Chocolate, warm packs, backrubs, whatever...seems to be an appropriate time to REALLY express love when it is most needed.
Just my opinion as a man, not a smirking boy.

It is unique that women get to have periods. The men get the crap us girls throw at em while we're unhappy while we are having them so....=^.^=
But if you wanna know what it feels like, just clamp onto your lower stomach and keep it clamped for about 5 days.
