Breathing slowly and deeply in while thinking 'breathing out' and breathing slowly and fully out while thinking 'breathing in' Holding one's breath while optionally squeezing one's stomach Breathing deeply through the nose, then exhaling slowly through the mouth Exhaling all the air from one's lungs and holding one's breath while swallowing water . It is thought that a number of specific nerves in the spinal cord at the back of the neck control hiccups. When something triggers these nerves - eating too quickly, for example - a signal is sent to the phrenic nerve, which controls the diaphragm. The diaphragm signals back to the hiccup center and hiccups begin. Within a split second, a structure called the glottis closes off the windpipe, producing the characteristic sound of a hiccup

Hiccups happen due to sudden spasmodic contraction of Diaphragm, the big muscle seperating the thoracic cage from abdominal cavity.
It goes into contraction if the nerve supply to Diaphragm is irritated. The reasons 1. Hypoxia(lack of oxygen) 2. any chemical / mechanical irritation of phrenic nerve which causes the diaphragm to contract.
Drinking water will help - during drinking you hold your breath by closing the larynx(voice box) which is upper part of the respiratory system, which precipitates hypoxia and reflex mechanisms cause your lungs to take a big deep breath correcting hypoxia which is one of the causes.
Same mechanism for holding breath. If you close your nostrils for a few seconds, lack of air/oxygen causes reflex increased inspiration(inhaling) to fill the lungs to fill with the air to relieve hypoxia and stops hiccups.
But it can also happen in certain general health problems like renal problems which cause increase in blood urea, which is an irritant and causes hiccups.

Hiccups are a spasm of your diaphram. There are lots of traditional ways to rid yourself of them, including hard laughing, holding your breath, and a good scare.
None work 100% of the time.

I never did learn what exactly causes hiccups, but I have learned how to end them. A spoon full of peanut butter. I'm serious. Just take some peanut butter on a spoon and swallow it slowly. This has never ever failed me. Good luck.

Air cause it. If you are eating too fast, you sometimes swallow air.
A good way to get rid of them is just drinking water and holding your breath as long as you can. Take a quick breath of air, not to much, like don't fill up your lungs, just a quick breath. Hold that as long as you can. Works for me.

hiccups are caused by the stimulation of the phrenic nerve which lies under the diaphragm muscle that separated the upper chest cavity from the lower chest cavity. There is a Rx called Xylocaine Viscous for the condition.Ask you do.

I've always eaten a spoonful of sugar and they seem to go away or breathe into a paper bag to relax your breathing.
