Effects are mostly used to mimic a certain sound that someone else has created - even distortion is an effect!.
So, it depends on the "rock" music you're playing... Chorus was a popular 80's effect, so you probably won't find much Guitar Chorus on a Green Day or Ramones track, but listen to the Cure or Guns & Roses, and you'll probably hear it.

Ask Angus Young of AC/DC. He has done pretty well plugging straight into his Marshall amp and turning up to 11.
If you do choose to use any effects pedals use them like spices in a recipe. A little bit goes a long way so use it sparingly.

go with asmul on this one. Guitar playing is an individual choice, just like getting dressed in the morning. If you like a sound go with it. Clean, dirty, chorused, flanged, it takes all kinds of sounds to make an interesting song these days.

Chorus is great if you use it "as needed". I've played with tons of rock guitarists that use it constantly and it becomes annoying.

No, You can play the guitar with no sound effects or as many as you like, nothing is required, aside from you and a guitar.

No, music comes from within, not from machines.
