I stopped using a mousepad entirely - I bought a trackball mouse, and don't need a pad anymore. Also, trackballs keep you from chasing the cord all over your desk - I highly recomend them.

It depends on a couple of factors:

1. What type of mouse you have.
2. What kind of mousepad you want/need.
3. How often you wash your hands (and/or how sweaty your palms are).

If you use an optical mouse, I'd say you don't need a mousepad at all (as long as your desk surface is pretty clean and doesn't make your cursor movement all dodgy and weird).

If you use a cloth mousepad, it will soak up perpiration and dirt faster which will then get in the mouse ball and that's what you are trying to avoid.

If you use a plastic "textured" mouse pad (which was my favorite type before going optical), you should only need to replace it if/when the texture wears off and the surface is slick to the touch.

Many people just use a mousepad because they like what it looks like and/or it helps them to keep their desk area cleaner for where they want to move the mouse around. If that's the case, change it whenever you feel like it.

Bottom line, though... If you eat snacks around your computer and/or don't wash your hands very often, your mousepad will get yucky fast. Especially the cloth ones, but even the plastic ones...

I did have a very interesting paper mousepad once that was printed with a traction pattern and when it got dirty, you could peel off the top sheet and go on to the next one... It was pretty cool... Something like this: http://www.mousepadlady.com/mousepaper.html Whatever though.

the best mousepads are plain material that most resemble cloth, plastic stuff with pictures and designed usually rip up fast and get sticky and all that stuff. A good mousepad only has to be replaced every 5 years or so. Than again it depends on how dirty your hands are

I use a trackball, I don't need a mousepad, but I use a mousepad to keep the track ball in place and I replace that prob. once a year

When your dog eats your old one. To be serious, I replace mine every 6 months or when my dog eats it.
