Pretty simple.

It means the gas tank sat for a long time partially empty and the interior of the tank rusted.

Replace the tank if you can and regardless if you can or cannot; install a fuel filter between the tank and the carb/injectors or you'll have even more trouble.

It also might help to change the spark plugs and add dielectric grease to all spark plugs and plug boots.

It means that some water was in the mix. You are probley safe to keep using the bike. What happens sometimes is Galvanic corrosion occurs. This is rust or corrosion similar to a steel ship newly placed in the Ocean. Here, the ship will start to rust fast but the rate that the rust grows will slowdown. This is because the salt and rusted metal surface form a barrier against further corrosion/rust to the non-surface area of the ship.

This is probley what is happening to your gas tank. So long as your tank has a thick wall (no leaks) you should be ok. Also, if some of the rust should get into the fuel lines your still ok. This is because your bike has a fuel filter (like a car) that will take care preventing rust from getting into the engine combustion chamber.

my hubby just said the best thing to do is simply replace the tank. There are other quick fixes, but if you want to keep the bike for a long time, flush the motor real good and replace the tank with a new one..
He has other methods, but this is what he thinks would be best and he restores old bikes and vehicles as a profession and as a hobby

That means it needs a new tank. The tank has sat so long the fuel went bad and rusted the inside of the tank.

both maximum straightforward strategies are agitation, combination/rocks nuts and bolts or perhaps with and shake the crap out of it for a lengthy time period, or chemical, typically a muratic acid answer, available at any pool grant keep, a 20% answer/water is the norm, complete power will eat the tank right into a puddle of poisonous goo. products like Kreem or Por15 come as a equipment for sealing the tank and in case you stick with guidelines artwork ok, under no circumstances heard of KBS, yet fairly effective there only a reproduction cat of the Kreem and Por15,

Get a new tank and replace the old one.It is only bolted on there isn't it?
Look at the way it is on there and how the hoses run.If you need to,make a diagram so that you won't get lost.
Write on the hoses to note where they are attached and put a new or used tank on your bike.

It means your gas tank has rust inside. Clean it and then seal it.

Try getting the tank off and clean it really good then check it to make sure it don't leak then reattach it and fill it up and you should be good to go.
