Our baby has only urinated since 3 am (13 hours ago). However, she has not had any bowel movements since 3am, only urinates. This is really worrying us as we are not aware if this is normal behavior in one week old newborns. If anyone can help us out, we'd really appreciate it. We're still waiting for the doctor to call us.

Not to worry. Some babies in the first few months of life can go several days without a bowel movement. As long as other things have not changed (peeing, taking to the bottle, activity level & behavior), that should not be a problem. In fact, the american association of pediatrics (AAP) says it's okay if a young infant goes 5 days without a bowel movement.

Of course, if you are still worried, I would call your child's pediatrician. I would also call if she has a fever, vomiting, or other changes.

Im not a doctor and everyone is different; but my daughter only had a bowel movement every other day or so for the first year of her life. And didn't urinate that often either. The doctor said it was alright because she was in great health, and he also said since she was nursing that it was nothing to worry about.

My son only had bowel movements every other day at that age. If baby is only urinating once in 13 hours he/she isn't getting enought fluids. If you are nursing, you need to do it more often or supplement with bottles. Also make sure you contact dr. Babies can dehydrate very quickly.

One week old is way too young to have a bathroom pattern yet. Sure, consult your doc, but it is probably nothing. If the baby didn't urinate for 13 hours that would be more worrisome. Better safe than sorry, though, so be certain to check it out.

your baby is fine a new borns digestive system changes and slows down they can go as long as about 10-12 days without a bowel movement more so if breast fed. as long as you baby is urinating then there are no problems.

my son didn't poop for like 3 days when he was 2 months old. it turned out that i had been eating things that made him constipated. it was getting into my breast milk and binding him up. these things included chocolate, cheese, rice, etc. try eating alot of veggies. my sister had to be careful how much veggies she ate while breastfeeding her son or he would get poop head to toe. if you are not breastfeeding it is pretty normal for her to go 13 hours without a bowel movement. after i took my son home from the hospital he didn't poop for over 24 hours. as soon as i got a hold of the doc he began to poop. i was like "never mind he's poopin!" i'm sure your daughter is fine. check with the doc to be sure. good luck.

Breastfed babies can go from one extreme to the other. Either dirtying their nappy every feed or going a few days without going, when my son was breastfed he only went every second day. I would try not to stress to much and talk to the doctor when he calls you back, but I'm guessing ever thing is fine!

Call your doctor. they say babies are supposed to have like around 6 wet diapers a day and especially with a baby that little, that's not right. Is she nursing, that's a question too. If she's not, and she's acting sick, contact the doctor

If your baby is acting as usual, not crying or fussing, and still eats.....dont worry. The doctor will tell you your a worried mother.
If your baby is fussing and crying and acts like she/he dont feel good, call the physician or his nurse because the little thing may be constipated.

"During the first six weeks, newborns generally have at least one bowel movement per day, and may have as many as 15."
