home erectus was the first to walk UPRIGHT on two legs, this gave him an advantage in hunting, better food, more meat, leading to a larger brain, which made him smarter. This leads to tool making, culture, and being self aware. ok ok, the real answer is .... they were following herds of game, moving north then east and west, as the glaciers receded over tens of thousands of years.
EDIT: oh no, I have to add .... Sheesh. The first species to walk upright were hominids that live about 5.4 million years ago. Long before Erectus.
