I have a BA in psychology, a baby when it starts to grow is female, in order for the baby to become male it requires a wave of the hormone testosterone. If the baby doesn't get this wave the the baby will be a girl if it does it will be a boy. Varying dosages of this wave or the amount of time the fetus is exposed to this wave can affect how manly the baby is (you've heard of the alpha male right?)
Well there is a theory going around that stress alters the levels of testosterone the baby gets and therefore its masculinity.
Mind you its just a theory, other than that I don't know but i;ve heard that a lot of stress isn't good.

Yes they are doing studies everyday on it to see if in fact the cortisol levels (stress hormone) in the mother during pregnancy will effect the child and they are seeing through the holocaust victims and their children as well as 9/11 vicitims and thier children that the cortisol levels vary between women with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) during pregnancy and those whitout it... let me see if I can find the article I read awhile ago...

When we are under stress, we release adrenaline. This is the "fight or flight" hormone. It increases the heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, tenses the muscles, slows digestion and urine production, makes us more alert.
This hormone crosses the placenta and goes into the blood of the fetus. A baby born to a mother who spent a lot of time under stress may exhibit symptoms of being restless, jittery and irritable.

yes because you are releasing hormones that can stress the baby also. It can lead to preterm labor, extended labor and what not. There is also a wives tale that it can make a colicy baby. I do not know how true that is...I mean was a stressed out pregnant teen trying ot graduate with hoinors, dealing with a not there baby father, and girls that he had slept with that threatened me and my unborn daughters lives, and she was a very happy and quiet baby.

Everyone has given you good answers, but what I want to add is that being stressed raises your blood pressure, and an elevated blood pressure is terrible for both you and the baby. Even more so if you are at risk for preecclampsia (aka toxemia).

Unfortunately, almost everything the mother feels and does (in the way of chemicals) is transmitted to the fetus. There is research that shows that depression is inherited (from the mother). Try to cheer up, and if you can't, at least play cheerful music.

My little bro has ADHD, and the doc says the most likely cause was my mother's stress during her pregnancy with him.
Take it easy, and relax!!
