My glass is half empty if there is something I like in it, and it is half full if there is something I don't like in it. As in, "Hey, I can't have this darn glass, it's half full of pee." Or, "Hey, bartender, my glass is half empty, how's about a refill?"

But most of the time, a glass contains x ounces of a substance.

Depends on what my glass is filled with. If I like it, then it's half-empty and I want more. If I don't, half-full and please don't keep refilling it.

There's so much water available to me I know that I can always refill my glass if I put my mind to it, so I don't worry about such things.

If it started full and you drank half, it's half empty. If it was empty and you fill it up half way, it's half full.
