Mitt Romney. Highly organized, well defined platform, and very politically saavy. How many other Republican hicks from Utah can go to overly Democrat New England states, be elected governor, and have the lead from both parties? If you want a real leader, I say Rudy Giuliani. I would vote for a Democrat if there were any as good leaders as these 2.
It is very important that a president be both a strong leader and a consensus builder. He should reflect the views of most Americans. If you are living in L.A., or NYC, you probably don't share the views of everyone in the country. It doesn't mean your views are wrong, just not the consensus. I feel the two men named would be good for most Americans.

If it weren't for the scandals (many of which were based on false allegations brought forth by people like Kennedy and Gore), former Senator Gary Hart might have become president, and I am confident he would have been a good one at that. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice- a Republican- is quoted as saying that Hart- her college mentor- was the last Democrat she supported for office. There is a good reason why a person like Rice would say that. Not only is Hart a moderate Democrat, but unlike so many of his peers, he is very strong on defense issues. He was one of the few individuals who "predicted" that a terrorist atatck on American soil was likely, and has since continued to voice his expertise on the issue.
But Hart is 1. Too old and 2. Admittedly a bad campaigner. In America the best and the brightest are rarely elected to higher office. In general, the mediocre products of internal compromise or sheer wealth rise to that position. The Democrats have been notorious for internal strife and division, producing the mediocre likes of Humphrey, McGovern, and Carter- all second- or third-round compromise candidates. Even Mondale and Dukakis weren't ideal candidates. The stupidity of Democrats is that they are really too dirty politically to be able to unite under one candidate. Attacks made by Democrats against each other during the primaries become easy fodder for Republicans during the national campaigns. (The reverse also happens, such as with Bush the Elder's claim that Reagonomics was "voo-doo economics", but the attacks have whittled down because Republicans realize that internal strife is counter-productive).
But you did ask who "should" be and Hart should be. But he won't. Instead, we're likely going to see a run by Hillary Clinton, Sens. Joe Biden, Lieberman, and Kerry, and possibly (tho not likely) a second run by Al Gore. Biden and Lieberman will fail, Kerry will probably end up withdrawing late, and Gore and Clinton might face each other at the convention. Ultimately, Clinton will become the nominee. It's actually not a terrible choice, since Clinton has national appeal (or notoriety, depending upon your politics), but her positions and votes in the Senate have been surprisingly moderate, causing strategist Karl Rove to regard her as the biggest threat to the Republican chances in 2008.

Who: condeleeza rice
Why:
Condeleeza Rice should be the next president, because she already works for the president, and she is one of the only women in US politics.
If she became the president of the USA she could stand up and be the first woman president and first african-american president and be the first ethnically-diverse president of the US.
Condeleeza Rice has made an AMAZING voice of the US politics, and Rice should belong to be President.

As cultural diversity has set in and growing ever more in this country, I do not think there should be another President.
Than what should be done? I think it is time for a tribunal. One elected official for each one of the ethnic cultures in this country. then needs to be established is agreeable set of laws that each culture must adhere to.
each representative will bring forth to the round table a list of issues that must be addressed for each community, it that issue is a majority problem than the issue will be dealt with appropriately. The country Shall maintain the integrity of Constitutional and its amendments. I will stop here, for now until I receive questions as to how this can be implemented.

Actually I would like to see an Obama Gore ticket. Obamam is a know humanitarian, while Gore is set on saving the planet. Both of these are good issues and could set America in the right direction.

John McCain -- he has the strength, wisdom, and experience to be a great president. He also has a political philosophy that appeals to the widest group of voters.

Some wealthy white guy. Because that's how it works.
Oh wait, you said 'should be' not 'will be'. I have no idea who should be president. I can't think of a single person that appeals to me or represents my believes.

out of those that realistically could be elected: I like John Edwards...
out of those who "wouldn't take the job because they know better": John Stewart knows more about politics than many in Washington... and he seems to be a good guy, unlike many in Wahsington...
